What are stem cells?

Stem cells are the basic building blocks of your body. These naturally occurring cells have the unique ability to develop into different types of specialized cells that perform specific functions. For example, a stem cell may turn into a bone cell, cartilage cell, or muscle cell.

How does stem cell therapy work?

Dr. Vyas uses stem cells to replace damaged or diseased cells in your body. When a cell is damaged from an injury or illness, it loses its ability to regenerate and replace itself with healthy new cells. When Dr. Vyas injects stem cells into an injured area, they help your body repair damaged tissues.

Stem cell therapy is a form of regenerative medicine because it uses biological materials to promote your body’s natural healing process. In some cases, stem cell therapy may reduce the need for surgery or pain medication to treat musculoskeletal injuries and diseases like arthritis.

Dr. Vyas may combine stem cell therapy with another regenerative medicine treatment, like platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections. PRP comes from your own blood and contains a high level of growth factors that stimulate tissue regeneration.

Where do stem cells come from?

There are several sources of stem cells. Mesenchymal stem cells come from adult tissues, such as bone marrow, blood, or fat. Certain stem cell therapy techniques use cells taken directly from your own body. Other methods use mesenchymal stem cells that come from a donor pool and get processed in a lab.

What does stem cell therapy treat?

Stem cells can repair and rebuild many types of tissues, including tendons, ligaments, bone, cartilage, and muscle. Studies show that stem cell therapy is an effective treatment for several orthopaedic conditions, including:

  • Osteoarthritis, especially of the knee and hip
  • Meniscus tears
  • Tendon injuries, such as rotator cuff tears
  • Ligament injuries like an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear
  • Fractures

Dr. Vyas may also recommend stem cell therapy to help you heal faster after a surgical procedure, such as ACL reconstruction or rotator cuff repair.
