request an appointmentWhat is a fracture?
A fracture is a broken bone. Your bone can break partially or completely and in a variety of ways. Dr. Vyas treats all types of fractures, including:
- Stable fractures, where the broken ends of bone line up properly
- Open or compound fractures, which cause bone to pierce through the skin
- Transverse fractures, which cause a horizontal break
- Oblique fractures, which break on an angle
- Comminuted fractures, which cause the bone to break into three or more pieces
Fractures usually cause intense pain that occurs immediately after the injury happens. Other signs and symptoms of a fracture include visible deformity, swelling, and bruising.
If you have a fracture that involves an open wound or bone protruding through a break in your skin, go to an emergency room right away.
How do fractures occur?
Any bone in your body can fracture. Dr. Vyas treats fractures in many different bones, including:
- Ankle fractures
- Foot fractures
- Wrist fractures
- Knee fractures
- Shoulder fractures
- Clavicle (collarbone) fractures
The type of fracture you get depends on the cause of your injury. The most common cause of fractures is trauma, such as a car accident or football tackle. Overuse from repetitive activities like running is a common cause of stress fractures, or hairline cracks in the bone. Osteoporosis can also increase your risk of getting a fracture because this condition makes your bones brittle.
How are fractures treated?
First, Dr. Vyas reviews your medical history and performs a physical exam. He may take an X-ray to confirm you have a fracture and evaluate the severity of your condition.
Then, he develops an individualized treatment plan for your specific needs. After he makes sure your bones are in proper alignment, Dr. Vyas may apply a cast or brace to immobilize your bone while it heals.
Complex fractures may require surgery to move the bones back into place. Dr. Vyas may use screws, rods, or metal plates to hold the pieces of bone together while they heal.
Depending on your needs, Dr. Vyas may recommend regenerative medicine, such as stem cell therapy or platelet-rich plasma (PRP), to promote healing.
